Léman Express, car or carpooling?
The commute is often a cross-border worker's biggest headache. Here are the three ways to cross the border every day, and what you need to know about each one.
- Train: the Léman Express links France and Geneva, with monthly or annual passes.
- Car: remember the Swiss motorway vignette, at 40 CHF per year.
- Carpooling: cheaper and fewer traffic jams, if your hours are regular.
The train: Léman Express
The Léman Express links Haute-Savoie and Ain with the canton of Geneva. To travel between France and Switzerland, there is the Léman Pass:
| Ticket | Use |
|---|---|
| Single ticket | One trip, valid for 1 hr 30 between Annemasse and Geneva |
| 1-day or 5-day card | Unlimited travel during the period |
| Monthly pass | Unlimited travel for 1 month |
| Annual pass | Unlimited travel for 1 year, the cheapest option. Under-26 version available |
Fares are on the TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes website.
The car
- Buy the Swiss motorway vignette: 40 CHF, valid for the year.
- Choose the electronic vignette, linked to your number plate. Buy it only on the official website e-vignette.ch: fraudulent websites add fees.
- Be careful: it does not renew automatically. Buy it again every year, before 1 February.
Without a valid vignette on the Swiss motorway, you risk a fine.
How much does the car cost per month?
Enter your figures: the total updates straight away. The values already entered are examples, except fuel and electricity prices, which are the French averages for October 2026.
Carpooling
Sharing the car with a colleague or a neighbour splits the cost of fuel and parking. It works well when working hours are regular. Ask your employer whether there is a carpooling group at the company.
